Pragmata review

This third-person action/adventure sci-fi title from Capcom really packs a digital punch!

STORY: While preparing to land on the Moon with his work crew, Hugh finds himself cutoff from all contact and caught in a series of unfortunate events. A strange substance has covered the Moon base and the robots intended to help secure it are instead out to seek and destroy. With help from a mysterious android girl with killer hacking abilities named Diana, it’s up to Hugh and her to find out who or what’s behind the base incursion and to get back to Earth in one piece.

GOOD:

  • Story is both actioned-centric & poignant, especially when focused on Hugh & Diana’s father/daughter relationship

  • Graphics, set pieces, level design

  • Puzzles, and training simulator are rewarding

  • Diana’s hacking abilities that enable forceful attacks are great

  • Upgrade system is simple and effective

  • Weapons are very cool & their upgrades can make them super powerful

  • Tough but fair enemies & boss fights makes even the simplest opponent defeat rewarding

  • Killer sound effects, music

SO-SO:

  • Where is my photo mode!?

BAD:

  • Game loop barely evolves from beginning to end you’ll be doing the same actions over and over

  • Not much variety in gameplay besides fighting and completing similar puzzles—even Hugh comments on the puzzles all being the same.

Overall, Pragmata is a success! It brings new elements to the action/adventure genre, while delivering a heartfelt story of survival and the future. I really hope there’s a sequel in its future.
