Star Fox 2 review

The sequel to the classic space shooter returns… even though it officially launched decades later.

STORY: Andross is out for revenge on Fox McCloud and his new (albeit, growing) band of mercenaries.

GOOD:

  • Mind-blowing 3D graphics for SNES tech

  • Ship-to-Robot transformation, non-linear with base-protection missions

  • Camera controls in a 3D environment on SNES? 🤯🤯🤯

  • Improved graphics overall & better environments

  • Tighter controls

  • Excellent, clearer music

SO-SO: Stopping ships before they meet home base was okay… I guess

BAD:

  • Longer than SF1 but still too short

Overall, Star Fox 2 is a near masterpiece. It improves on nearly all fronts from the original, while keeping core mechanics in tact. When you see the game running and remember what the technology it was running on in 1995, it is unbelievable. What an achievement.

SCORE: 9.5/10
